What is life like underwater? Light and sound effects simulate the conditions on the seafloor. Learn about the scientific exploration of the Norwegian coastline, the second-longest in the world. The youngest can climb into a diver’s helmet, take a “Selfish” or study shells and snails under a microscope.

Through conflict and success, the incredible growth of the herring fisheries and cod fishing in Lofoten has provided a way of life along the coast. Today, fish farming has developed into Norway’s second-largest export trade. At our museum children can create their own fantasy sea creatures while three generations of fishermen tell you about their fascinating lives on film.

Bergen has for a thousand years supported itself
by exploiting the sea in different ways. While
seal hunting, after its golden age, had to bow to international protests, the largest fish farming companies are based in Bergen and are growing rapidly. How will the ocean city Bergen develop in the coming years?
As a citizen of “Fin City”, you can help us with an important and exciting task – producing seafood! Stand at the head of a fjord, make sure the salmon fry grow up big and strong, feed the salmon in their enclosures, sort the fish at the processing plant and sell seafood to the whole world!
The Norwegian Fisheries Museum occupies 18th-century wharf side warehouses previously used to store stockfish. The warehouses stand on wooden structures out in the sea, surrounded by the restored canals and joined by covered bridges. This building style was typical for the historical Sandviken district, giving rise to its nickname the “Venice of the North”.
The Norwegian Fisheries Museum lies at the water’s edge by the Byfjorden and is surrounded by Norway’s largest veteran boat harbour. Rent a rowboat for the whole family or paddle a green kayak and help us preserve the ocean.

Welcome to an out of the ordinary experience packed with knowledge and excitement! At Storeblå, you get
a unique insight into Norwegian aquaculture. Explore and learn more about this industry in our audiovisual exhibition and combine your visit with an adventurous RIB boat trip to a fish farm outside Bergen. Storeblå is only a short walk away.
In the gift shop on the ground floor, you will find inspiring toys and maritime-themed gifts for children and adults. At the reception, you can borrow a green kayak, rent a rowboat, book a tour and get information on activities and experiences the museum can offer.
From November 2026, ALF (ArbeidsLivsForberedelse) will take over the operation of Kafe Hjemom at the Norwegian Fisheries Museum.
Owned by the City of Bergen, ALF works with inclusion and work training, and also runs Klosterhagen Hotel at Nordnes.Together, the museum and ALF aim to develop Kafe Hjemom as a warm and inclusive meeting place — for the neighbourhood, museum visitors and everyone who wants to drop by.
Kafe Hjemom is part of HJEMOM, a larger initiative at the museum creating spaces for community, cultural exchange and encounters across generations and backgrounds.
